How to remove a background from an image

Is background removal free?
Background removal and the browser editing tools do not require an editing subscription or account. Automatic removal downloads a model on first use and processes the photo on your device. Canva transfer requires Canva account authorization.
Can I download an image with a transparent background?
Yes. Remove the photo background, then choose Transparent PNG. This export excludes the replacement color or background image you selected.
How do I improve cutout edges?
Zoom in and use Erase or Restore to fix the mask. Feather, edge adjustment and color fringe cleanup can refine the result. Hair, glass and complex scenes may still need manual adjustments.
Can I remove backgrounds from several photos at once?
Yes. Use the Bulk background removal section to add up to 20 PNG, JPG or WebP images. Each file can be up to 20 MB, with 100 MB total per batch. Processing runs one image at a time; download completed transparent PNGs together as a ZIP.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
Background removal and manual editing run in your browser. Direct Canva transfer uploads the cutout through our server to Canva only when you choose to send it. Download your results before closing the page: the editor does not save your project permanently.
Which image formats can I upload and download?
Upload PNG, JPG or WebP images. Export PNG, JPG or WebP from Download / Project. JPG fills transparent areas white. Save an editable Tabaix project to reopen your original image, cutout and background here, or download separate PNG layers as a ZIP. Bulk results download as transparent PNG files inside a ZIP archive.

Automatic removal downloads an open-source model on first use and processes your photo locally. An internet connection and a modern browser are required. Balanced and Detail use higher precision model weights than Fast, with larger downloads and higher memory use. CPU is the compatible default. Optional GPU mode falls back to CPU on reported GPU errors; if your driver stalls, reload the page and choose CPU. Higher export resolution does not guarantee better hair or glass detail. Feather softens masks, edge adjustment trims or expands semi-transparent boundaries, and fringe cleanup borrows nearby subject colors. Each Apply is an undoable edit. Magic wand removes connected pixels of similar color; click the background. Erase and restore brushes refine the cutout. Heal fills a brushed area using nearby colors and works best on small objects against simple backgrounds. Download includes your chosen background. Use the mouse wheel over the image to zoom around your cursor. Hold Space and drag, or choose Move, to pan without painting. On a touch screen, pinch with two fingers to zoom and move; use one finger with Erase or Restore to paint. Fit centers the whole picture, and 100% displays actual image pixels. Zoom changes the view only; export resolution stays the same. Edits are temporary until you download.
